Because there is such a great need in our community, Foodshare has to acquire food from every possible source to meet the demand. We have several programs in place, hugely supported by our donors and volunteers, to help fill the gap and keep our hungry neighbors healthy and strong.
Last year Foodshare distributed enough food for 11.5 million meals to 300 partner programs.
Foodshare is part of Connecticut’s emergency response system, providing food to those who are affected by local or regional disasters. We also store food here for FEMA, as part of the national disaster relief programs.
The Supplement Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), is perhaps the most powerful tool for increasing the amount of food available for people in need. We train volunteers to help people apply, so more people can receive those benefits.
