The New England Farmers Union Takes a Stand Against Hunger
Right here in America, one in six people struggles with hunger – including one in four kids. In response, members of the New England Farmers Union (NEFU) have decided to take action!
For each new member between now and March 1, the Union has agreed to donate $2.50 to support Feeding America food banks here in New England. Donations will then be matched by the National Farmers Union AND The Howard G. Buffet Foundation, up to $50,000. That means with the match, every new member results in $10 to help provide food for hungry families throughout New England.
“Right now we have an opportunity to make an incredible impact in the fight against hunger right here in our backyards. Feeding America will send the funds from each state’s members back to the nine food banks that serve the New England community,” according to a spokesperson for the NEFU.
Please show your support by visiting www.newenglandfarmersunion.org and by learning about New England Farmers Union. Consider joining and encourage your friends and family to do the same. NEFU is a member-driven organization that is committed to enhancing the quality of life for family farmers, fishermen, nurserymen and consumers through educational opportunities, cooperative endeavors and civic engagement. All are welcome as members.
Howard G. Buffett is a fellow farmer who supports small farm issues and is also an advocate for and supporter of Feeding America in the fight against hunger. Buffett hopes that by issuing this challenge grant, he can provide a meaningful platform for the agricultural community to support hunger relief and help their neighbors in need. Over the years Feeding America has been a friend to farmers, standing by their side on many legislative issues of interest to the farming community.

About Foodshare
Foodshare is the heart of greater Hartford’s fight against hunger, bringing together individuals and organizations to create effective solutions to end hunger in all 42 towns of Hartford and Tolland counties. Serving as our region’s food bank, we distribute 16 tons of food each day to a network of 300 local partners that feed our hungry neighbors. This vital safety net helps more than 128,000 people in our region who are at risk including seniors, the working poor, and 50,000 children. But ending hunger requires more than just distribution of food. Reducing the number of people in need by increasing their self-sufficiency helps to address the chronic underlying reasons why people are hungry. These stem from poverty, not just the immediate lack of food. And Engaging members of the greater community to increase understanding of these real causes and solutions to hunger is crucial. Our goal is to inspire community members to become personally involved in effective hunger solutions. Since 1982, Foodshare has sought to end hunger in our region. Working in partnership with other community leaders such as the United Way, End Hunger Connecticut! and 211 Infoline, Foodshare has the experience and is building the networks necessary to help make this vision a reality.
