Summer Foodshare For KidsSummer camp can create memories that last a lifetime... yet for kids who live with food insecurity, summer can be a hard time. Last summer, counselors at Camp Courant reported seeing kids who were stashing away part of their Friday lunches to take home for the weekend. Some said they had brothers or sisters who were not at camp but would need something to eat. Camp Courant alerted Foodshare and we were able to get food to these kids to take home with them as they left camp on Fridays. At Foodshare, we saw the need and acted on it... now, we are expanding on it. This summer, we plan to be at Camp Courant again and have created the Summer Foodshare For Kids program. This year, we wanted to help even more children in need of food, and so, we are expanding our program to additional Hartford sites: the Wilson Gray YMCA, the Arroyo Recreation Center, and the Parker Memorial Community Center. By expanding the partnership to Hartford’s Department of Family, Children, Youth & Recreation programs this year the goal is to provide nutritious food to 1,145 kids over a ten-week period. Foodshare is working to provide the healthiest possible choices and we plan to include as much fresh fruit and veggies as possible, but as always, we are relying on your support to help us meet the need. Foodshare will also continue to promote and publicize the USDA Summer Meals Program that provides free meals at locations across the region during the summer.
